Anita DeFrantz Hello and welcome to my website. Life is enriched through sharing experiences, and so I would like to share some of my life experiences here with you. Most of my adult life has been devoted to a career in sport. This sometimes strikes me as remarkable because as a child there were almost no sports opportunities open to me. I went to college and law school with the intention of becoming a practicing attorney and one day a judge. In fact, after earning my law degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1977 and being admitted to the Pennsylvania bar, I practiced law for more than two years at the Juvenile Law Center of Philadelphia. I began rowing as an undergraduate at Connecticut College and continued to train and compete during my time in law school and there after in Philadelphia. I was fortunate enough to make the 1976 Olympic Team and represent the USA at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. The 1976 Games proved to be a life-changing experience for me. Those Games gave me a vision of the power of sport and a world perspective. Over the next several years, through my opposition to the US Olympic boycott of the 1980 Games and the opportunity to work as a vice president of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, sport became the platform for my career and the means by which I sought to give back so that others can benefit from access to sport. President, LA84 Foundation In 1987, the Board of Directors of the LA84 Foundation (formerly the AAFLA) elected me to serve as President. The LA84 Foundation, a legacy of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, is a private foundation. Our philanthropic work centers on the development of youth sport. The LA84 Foundation's mission is to expand youth sports opportunities in Southern California as we increase public knowledge of sport. The Foundation has invested more than $164 million in Southern California sport by awarding grants to youth sports organizations, initiating sports and coaching education programs, and operating the world's premier sports library. Foundation grants have benefited more than 1,000 Southern California youth sports organizations serving 2 million youngsters. The Foundation's own sports programs include the Coaching Education Program as well as large-scale sports participation programs such as Summer Swim and Run 4 Fun, which serve nearly 20,000 boys and girls each year. The LA84 Foundation also hosts conferences and sponsors research on a variety of sport topics. The LA84 Foundation's practical knowledge, acquired through years of direct involvement in youth sports, combined with its wide range of education services enables the Foundation to serve as a leading forum for the exchange of ideas and exploration of issues in sport. MEMBER, INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE The International Olympic Committee elected me as a member in 1986. My term is set to expire in 2032. Founded in 1894, the IOC is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that leads the worldwide Olympic Movement and controls the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games are a celebration of human excellence and they are based on the principles of fair play and mutual respect. The long range goals are devoted to promoting peace, international understanding and human dignity through sport. The Olympic Movement is comprised of many local, national and international groups including the IOC, Organizing Committees of the Olympic Games, National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations, national sports associations, clubs and, of course most important, the athletes. My work within the IOC over the years has included serving as a executive board member, a vice president, as Chair of the Women and Sport Commission and on a number of IOC Commissions including those dedicated to athletes, program, eligibility, finance, coordination, juridical, reform and environmental concerns. My responsibility within the USA as an IOC member is to regularly brief, update and advise our ever changing national, state and local leadership and national sport interests on all matters concerning the IOC and sport, while seeking common ground and shared purpose. This volunteer position is an extraordinary responsibility and privilege. I believe that it is my responsibility as a member of the IOC to ensure that the Olympic Games endure and flourish. MEMBER, UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE I became a member of the United States Olympic Committee Board of Directors in 1976 and since that time have served in a number of capacities including as a member of current 11-person USOC Board of Directors. The USOC is a federally chartered non-profit corporation accountable to the American people and the United States Congress. It is responsible for the governance of all multi-sport activities in the USA. The USOC serves as our country's National Olympic Committee in the worldwide Olympic Movement and organizes US participation in the Olympic Summer Games; the Olympic Winter Games; the Paralympic Sumer Games; the Paralympic Winter Games; and, the Pan-American Games. My work within the USOC over the years has included supporting all US Olympic Host cities and bid cities, sport programs as well as the training, selection and care of US athletes. My ability to serve in these areas has been enhanced by my experience as an IOC member. MEMBER, FISA (INTERNATIONAL ROWING FEDERATION) Since 1993 I have been Vice President of FISA, the International Rowing Federation. I was introduced to rowing at Connecticut College and continued to row at Vesper Boat Club while in law school years at the University of Pennsylvania. As a competitor, I was a member of the United States Rowing Association Board of Directors from 1975 to 1979. Rowing has long been my personal sport pursuit as well as a life teacher. Called "the noblest of sports", rowing is also "the ultimate team sport" as each team member must be in complete synchronization with every other person in their boat. There are no time-outs, no, "Hold on until I can get back to you." The fate of the boat is always determined by the actions of the whole. There are no individual stars, except for those rowing in the single scull. Rowing tends to create people who give back to their community. Former rowers are often found volunteering their time in support of community efforts. Leadership is also a responsibility given to those of us from rowing. Perhaps this is because we each have had to learn first how to follow. Through sport and my on-going volunteer involvements, I have traveled the world, learned from hundreds of cultures and concluded that optimism about the future of our world is well placed.
